Why 12 testers?

Google Play's policy requires personal developer accounts to have at least 12 opt-in testers who each test the app for at least 14 consecutive days before the app can be published to the general public. This is the biggest hurdle for solo indie developers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Google Play closed testing and TESTers

What is Google Play's 12-tester requirement?

Since November 2023, Google requires personal developer accounts to have at least 12 opt-in testers who each keep the app installed for 14 consecutive days before the app can be published to the general public on Google Play. This policy was introduced to improve app quality and reduce spam on the platform.

Do testers need to open the app every day?

No. Testers only need to opt-in via the testing link and keep the app installed on their device for 14 consecutive days. There is no requirement to actively use or open the app daily. Simply having it installed is sufficient for Google's counting system.

How do I get my closed testing opt-in link?

Go to Google Play Console โ†’ select your app โ†’ Testing โ†’ Closed Testing โ†’ select your track (e.g. Alpha) โ†’ Testers tab โ†’ "How testers join your test" section โ†’ copy the link. The link format is: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/your.package.name

Is TESTers free to use?

Yes, TESTers is completely free for both developers and testers. Posting your app and finding testers costs nothing. We are funded by advertising, which allows us to keep the service free forever.

How long does closed testing take?

Once you have 12 or more testers who have kept your app installed for at least 14 consecutive days, you can apply for production access on Google Play. The entire process typically takes 2โ€“4 weeks depending on how quickly you find testers.

What is the difference between internal testing and closed testing?

Internal testing allows up to 100 testers and does not count toward the 12-tester production requirement. Closed testing is the track that counts toward the requirement. You must have 12 opt-in testers on the closed testing track for 14 consecutive days to qualify for production release.

Can I post any Android app?

Only apps with a valid Google Play closed testing opt-in link (https://play.google.com/apps/testing/...) can be posted. Spam, malicious apps, or fake listings are not allowed and will be removed. The community self-moderates through the report feature.

How can I become a tester for other apps?

Browse the Tester Recruitment Board, find an app you're interested in, and click "Become a Tester". You'll be taken to the Google Play opt-in page. Install the app and keep it installed for 14 days to help the developer reach their goal. Consider leaving feedback to help them improve their app.
